Description
1970 Chrysler Newport
The Newport was a name used by Chrysler for both a hardtop body designation and also for its lowest priced model between 1961 and 1981. Chrysler first used the Newport name on a 1940 show car, of which five vehicles were produced. The Newport continued the tradition of a large, comfortable luxurious coupe and sedan, while offering a modestly priced product in comparison to the Chrysler New Yorker and Chrysler Imperial. The Newport gradually replaced the Chrysler Windsor which originally replaced the Chrysler Royal. The Newport was initially the brand name for the Windsor with a hardtop body style, then was used for coupes, sedans and station wagons in later decades.
For consignment, a large and long piece of Detroit iron, built back in the day when gas was still under a dollar, and status was measured by the inch.
Exterior
Bathed in light green metallic, this long luxury cruiser presents in good condition, has straight steel, good gaps, and large inset bumpers. The front and rear decks are like football fields, long and flat, and a trim spear runs the gamut from stem to stern. Window trimmings are all shiny and nice, and standard wheel coverings are on all 4 corners.
Interior
Oxblood vinyl and broadcloth adorn the interior which is all in very nice shape. Same for the dash and door panels. An angled dash has plenty of buttons and knobs to play with and even some are under the black dash top. For the passenger a spacious glovebox and an ash receptacle, (Smoke 'em if ya got 'em!). Floors are more maroon thick pile carpeting, and the headliner is maroon broadcloth which is nice and tight.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a numbers matching 383ci V8 rated at 290hp, which is plenty of power to move all this steel along at highway speeds and acceleration. It has a single 2 barrel carburetor atop, and an A727 Torqueflite automatic tranny on back. The rear axle is 8-3/4 inches. A Flowmaster exhaust is now on.
Undercarriage
Underneath has spotty surface rust, and certainly no invasive rust or structural problems. Some road dirt is also noted on various parts of the suspension which is independent torsion bar front, and leaf sprung for the back. Power drum braking is on all 4 corners.
Drive-Ability
A big car with the biiiiig car ride, it has smooth acceleration, bias free braking, and silk like shifting for the automatic tranny. The AC is not working, and the radio will not turn on.
Large and in charge for this Newport. A fantastic cruiser with the length to impress even the highest executive.
